Review

Taubenfeld and colleagues introduce Fuse, a multi-agent simulation framework for evaluating how LLM assistants infer another person's hidden motive from a user's subjective retelling. The construction matters because it creates ground truth by design while preserving the information asymmetry of real advice seeking. Across 12 models, user mediation reduces performance, biased framing produces larger degradation in most models than in the human baseline, and additional conversational turns do not reliably repair the problem. The paper also separates abstention from correctness rather than treating refusal to infer as ordinary failure.

For governance, the durable contribution is the distinction between evidence and mediated interpretation. An assistant receives no independent account of the social event, yet its response can be experienced as a second opinion. Fuse shows how that apparent independence can be false: the model may amplify the narrator's framing while presenting the result in its own authoritative voice. In consequential settings, this becomes an epistemic authority problem. Provenance of the user's account does not establish the legitimacy of the assistant's inference about an absent third party.

The evaluation is unusually operational: 21,600 user messages, controlled bias and detail conditions, 12 model evaluations, and 24,000 human annotations validate both simulated motive manifestation and first-message solvability. The synthetic construction is also its boundary. Ground truth exists because motives are assigned by the simulation, whereas real social motives are contested, mixed and often unknowable. The forced-choice design deliberately suppresses uncertainty, and the chosen abstention credit encodes a normative utility-caution trade-off rather than discovering one.

Fuse therefore supports a useful assurance test but not a deployment rule. A governable assistant would need controls that preserve the distinction between reported fact, user interpretation and model inference; make uncertainty legible; avoid laundering subjective framing into independent evidence; and provide stronger constraints when an inference can affect employment, care, relationships or other consequential decisions.
